"The Sjögren Patient's Journey"
It's hard to believe, but the average time from onset of symptoms to diagnosis is approximately seven years. Sjögren's syndrome often is undiagnosed or misdiagnosed. A diagnosis is often difficult because some symptoms of Sjögren's syndrome can vary from person to person.
"The Sjögren Patient's Journey" consumer awareness survey highlights some of the difficulties that women who have been diagnosed with Sjögren's syndrome have faced on their way to receiving proper diagnosis.
The goal of this survey was to help identify, understand, and raise awareness of different roadblocks that may occur during the time it takes for a patient to be diagnosed with Sjögren's syndrome. It highlights the "patient's journey" in the hope that in the future, women will be more vocal about talking with their doctors about their symptoms. It also serves to help doctors recognize the symptoms of Sjögren's syndrome, especially dry mouth, earlier in the process so that patients can be diagnosed and treated sooner.
